Sissu is now a popular tourist destination because it is the first town you see after exiting the tunnel. The access to Lahaul Valley has grown much easier, resulting in an influx of tourists. It takes a long time.

The tunnel takes about 30-40 minutes to pass, and then you’re in a completely different environment. The main attraction in the mountains is nature, which includes mountains, waterfalls, rivers, snow, and verdant meadows. This is what Sissu has to offer.

Sissu Falls

This is another sight in Sissu, which sits high above the mountains in the Sissu and only accessible after a difficult hike.

The Atal Tunnel

Atal Tunnel is 9 kilometres long, making it one of the world’s longest highway tunnels. It connects Manali and the Lahaul Spiti valley all year, unlike in the past, when the area was cut off from the outside world during the winters and only accessible by helicopter. The Atal tunnel, located west of the Rohtang pass, cuts through the mountain below. The Atal tunnel cuts the distance between Manali and Leh in half. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee laid the foundation for this tunnel in 2002. After his party fell out of power, the Congress party forgot about the tunnel. This tunnel was constructed in record time thanks to the dynamic leader of the century and Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. This is what he said,
– “Unprecedented pace was given to the project. Every problem faced by the BRO was resolved. The result was that while earlier 300-meter tunnel work was being accomplished every year, it reached 1,400 meters a year. In six years, we completed the work of 26 years.”

Sissu (also known as Khwaling) is a small village in India located in the Himachal Pradesh Valley of Lahaul.

Sissu is a small village in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul Valley, situated high above on a large area of land on the Chandra River’s bank. In the local dialect, Sissu is referred to as Khagling. On your trip to Keylong and then on to Leh, it’s roughly 90 kilometres from Manali. The distance between Sissu and Keylong is 30 kilometres, and the distance between Sissu and Leh is 380 kilometres. Sissu is home to the famed ‘Raja Geypan’ temple. While passing through Sissu, residents and Himachalis from far and wide pay their respects to Lord Geypan, who is famed for sheltering the inhabitants of the Lahaul valley.

Sissu hamlet, which has since grown into a little town, is well worth visiting. This location has the advantage of being on the national route that connects Manali and Leh. Greenery abounds in this village, with lush willow and poplar trees, steep mountains, and a lake. In the background, the famed Gyephan peak can be seen in all of its glory. In this busy technology driven life people never get a chance to experience Autumn season in full fledged mode. But, Himachal remotely gives you a chance to cherish it. With the opening of the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, connectivity has increased dramatically, making it much easier to reach Lahaul and Spiti. If you start from Manali, it takes about 30-40 minutes to cross the tunnel and arrive in a completely different geographical environment in Lahaul & Spiti.

Spiti will be beautifully covered in Autumn vibes in the coming month of October. As Summer faded into Autumn, I was able to witness the beautiful colours that this season brings. Also, while driving in Lahaul and Spiti, you can truly get lost in the breathtaking scenery.

Drive to Sissu Village Via Atal Tunnel

The best way to explore this side is to rent a car or bike. We took a cab from Manali and began our journey. It is a 33-kilometer drive to the north end of the tunnel, which leads to Spiti Valley. When you emerge from the tunnel, you are greeted by a beautiful landscape and a completely different geographical condition.

You can pull over to the side of the road and take in the fresh air. It’s a fantastic experience. The route is well-kept and is ideal for a road trip. Sissu Settlement is the first village on the road from Tunnel’s North End, about 6 kilometres away.

Sissu to Keylong

After having fun in Sissu, travel 30 kilometres to Keylong for a fantastic road drive and Autumn Vibes if you’re here in October. You can visit nearby Monasteries or drive till Deepak Taal ahead of Keylong.

If you want to get the most out of your visit, it will be recommended to stay at Sissu for one night. There are many guest houses and homestays/hotels in the area that are reasonably priced. The majority of them also enjoy a magnificent balcony outlook. The village has a population of roughly 300-400 people, making it a tiny but wonderful spot to stay.

Spots to Visit in Sissu

You can go to Sissu Lake, which is close to the Helipad. You can also trek to Sissu Waterfall. Keylong is only 30 kilometres away, and the drive there is once again breathtaking. Along the route, you’ll get a taste of Autumn.

The fact that there is a helipad here is an interesting fact. When Sissu and adjacent villages are blanketed in snow and life comes to a halt, locals use government-provided helicopter services to travel to Bhuntar and nearby locations. These individuals usually spend 8 months here and 4 months in Bhuntar during the harsh winters.
